Are you the type of person who makes New Year’s Resolutions? Do you sometimes wonder if you’ll really honor them past when that ball drops? Resolutions are funny things. In theory, they’re a great idea, but they can be hard to carry out. Below, we’ve listed a few ways to help you strategize the best way to choose some resolutions and stick with them.
1.Reflect on your past year… What would you change? What were you happy with? What do you want to better? What went well? What didn’t? This will help you come up with something more than just cutting soda out of your diet for the first week of January. You might find yourself realizing what you really need is to relax more, or to find more meaningful relationships.
2.Be Realistic: If you don’t like running, and don’t currently run, don’t tell yourself you’re going to run a mile everyday. Choose to do something that fits in with your personality. Don’t worry about what other people think. Just do what you need to do to make your life better.
3.Cluster Your Goals: Pick a few goals that go well together, that help you accomplish other goals. “Going to Bed On Time” will help you “Exercise for 30 Minutes a Day” which will help you “Eat 3 Balanced Meals,” which might help you “Save Money,” and “Vacation More Often.” This way, you’ll be able to enrich your entire life, one step at a time.
4. You Do You: Make sure that the resolutions you choose come from personal desires and are not results of peer pressure or from friends and family. Just because your mom is on a carb-free diet doesn’t mean you have to be. Maybe you’d rather focus your energy on reading one non-fiction novel a month.
5.Write It Down: Make a list, a physical list and keep in a spot you see often, such as your planner or on your mirror. Maybe you’re the checklist type, or maybe you’d rather have a bunch of sticky notes around your house. Whatever it is, having a physical reminder can be extremely helpful.
